What is onychomycosis?
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail that is seen in up to 10% of the population, regardless of age. The symptoms of the infections are itching, nail peeling, rash, and odor among others. This medical condition can be very persistent through the years.
Other symptoms include a change in the color of the nail and its surroundings. Nail fungus should be treated properly as it may cause other infections, too.
How to treat nail fungus?
The traditional methods include local systematic treatment with antimycotic medication. Unfortunately, this often causes a variety of side effects. This is why laser therapy can be added to the treatment arsenal. We use Lumenis M22/Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser, which deactivates the pathogenic fungi without harming the tissue around the nail. Since nail growth is a time-consuming process, laser therapy may require 6-9 months. Initially, the treatment starts with one session per week, later sessions take place after longer periods, which may vary from two to four weeks. The only requirement is to have your nails cut and rasped (polished). This allows the laser to penetrate it more effectively.
Does it hurt?
Patients often feel warmth around their fingertips. One-off interventions do not improve the general condition because fungi's replication can be blocked only through vast amounts of energy.
The benefits of laser therapy treatment:
- laser light affects the whole infected area, including beneath the nail surface
- you cannot become resistant
- each session lasts 10-15 minutes
- there are no side effects
- it doesn't require any preparation at all
- the results are promising
- you can combine it with other therapeutic methods
